America 250 Committee: In 2026, the United States of America will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Durham's America 250 Committee purpose is to plan, develop and coordinate community events and activities surrounding the 250th anniversary. To view the Committees full charge, click here. Members are working hard planning events for 2026! Some exciting events to look out for:
- Lecture Series
- Main Street Tours
- Durham Town Picnic: Saturday, June 6, 2026
- Reading of the Declaration of Independence and committal of Time Capsule: Thursday, July 2, 2026
- Pest House hikes, Cemetery tours, Colonial Garden lecture, Garden Club tree planting, and Genealogy lecture
- An immersive Revolutionary War history event in celebration of America’s 250th birthday! Engage with Continental and British troops, observe two mock battles, and learn what civilian and camp life was like for those fighting for American independence. Food will be available for purchase from local non-profit groups and sutlers/vendors will be available. Event will take place on the Durham Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 17, 2026
