*Troop 27 Eagle Project- Travis Newell*

Hello my name is Travis Newell and I began climbing the Trail to Eagle when I was about 5 or 6 years old as a Cub Scout in Pack 27 here in Durham. Currently I am trying to make my way to the summit of the Eagle Trail by completing my Eagle Scout Project.

For my Eagle Project I am planning and carrying out a Computer Recycling Drive within our community. This project has both human and environmental benefits. People these days think recycling a computer is simply bringing it to the local dump or landfill or just throwing it away in the garbage, but it’s not. Discarding computers and components in this manner leads to many hazardous problems, putting both animals and humans at high risk. Computer components contain lead, mercury, arsenic, and other materials which can lead to illness and even death.

These toxins can also pollute ground water. Animals, such as birds and squirrels, are highly attracted to the color of the components which may cause them to choke; they even use the material for their nesting homes.

Another good aspect of this project is that all personal data/information will be completely destroyed from, the computers hard drive; this limits the possibilities of Identity theft and other related issues.

In order to complete this project I needed to find a company or organization to recycle the computers and components. So I found Rich Cianci, Owner of The Computer Works located in Cromwell via a link from the EPA and Earth 911. I also learned Rich Cianci and The Computer Works have recycled/reused computers and components for the IRS, banks, schools and pharmaceutical companies. They reuse about 99.99% of all equipment they take in and destroy all the data/information that has been left on computers hard drives.

*On Saturday May 24^th , 2008 from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Strong School Parking Lot, please join us to help our environment by bringing your unwanted computers and components.*
