History:   Following World War II Durham began to grow rapidly.   The townspeople created a Planning Commission to study the town and the statutes pertaining to planning.  The commission drew up a code of regulations.  The commission, consisting of five persons, is also in charge of approval of public buildings.  In 1963 Durham joined the Midstate Regional Planning Agency.  At a special town meeting on March 28, 1955, the town adopted the provisions of Chapter 43 of the General Statutes, Revision of 1949 (and as amended thereafter) with respect to zoning, and decided that if zoning was adopted to act upon an ordinance by which the Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals would be created and maintained, and by which the work of the existing Planning commission be continued in cooperation with the said Zoning Commission; to appropriate a sufficient sum of money to  institute zoning and to provide for the cost of keeping it in effect.  At a Special Town Meeting on April 11, 1955, the town elected members of the Zoning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals.
