Conservation Commission
Authority:               At a Special Town Meeting held on December 16, 1963, electors of the Town of Durham adopted a resolution that created the Conservation Commission.  The Board's authority is also derived from the Town Charter, Section 6 – 12 and Section 7 – 131a of the General Statutes of the State of Connecticut.
Powers and
Duties
:

The  commission  is authorized and empowered to negotiate any and all leases for the rental of such open space land, to develop and execute plans and programs for the conservation and use of such open space land, and to delegate  responsibility for the intensive management of any part of these lands to other public and private organizations for the benefit of the public.  Additional powers and duties are provided in Section 7 – 131a of the General Statutes of the State of Connecticut.

Town Charter Section 6 –12, Section 7 –131A, B, C, and E of the General Statutes of the State of Connecticut, and the Town Proceedings Book 1957-1964, Special Town Meeting December 16, 1963.

Appointing Authority:    Members are appointed by the Board of Selectmen.
Term of Office:   

Three years, with three members being appointed each year. 

Constitution of Board/Quorum:        

Originally  five  members  were to be appointed by the Board of Selectmen of the town.  The 1972 Durham Charter revision increased the number of members of the Conservation Commission from 5 to 9. 

History:  

At a special  town meeting held on December 16, 1963, electors of the Town of Durham adopted a resolution that created and established a Conservation Commission with the powers and duties provided in Section 7 – 131a of the General Statutes of the State of Connecticut.
