Durham has a full-time elected tax collector whose term in office is four years.  The primary responsibilities of this position are the billing for and collection of all tax money due the town and making timely deposits of collections for town use.

 

The mil rate approved by the Board of Finance for the 2010 Grand List is 30.46.This rate is in effect for the first installment of Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes and the total Motor Vehicle Taxes which are due July 1st 2011 but taxpayers have until August 1st 2011 to pay without penalty.  The second half of Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes are due January 1st  2012 but taxpayers have until February 1st 2012 to pay without penalty.  Interest is then charged at 1½% per month from the due date of July 1st or January 1st.  Supplemental Motor Vehicle Tax bills are sent out in December of each year and are also due by January 1st  2012 but taxpayers have until February 1st 2012 to pay without penalty. Please pay by mail if possible.  Payments postmarked by August 1st and February 1st are considered on time payments!

Please note that according to State Statutes the Tax Collector may not waive interest charges at any time.  In order to obtain a clearance for the Motor Vehicle Department delinquent taxes must be paid to the Tax Collector by cash or certified check in accordance with local ordinance. 

 

The Town of Durham has contracted with the third party vendor, Sallie Mae, to process municipal services payments made electronically via ACH
(e-checking) or credit card. A convenience fee will be charged by Sallie Mae to process your electronic payment. This fee is not collected by or remitted
to the Town of Durham.
